Welcome! New blog, Facebook page and logos

Welcome! I am Heather Tuya, library media specialist at Greenbrier Elementary in Washington County, Maryland, and I decided to start this blog as a way to share some of my projects and ideas with other educators and media specialists, as well as to give Greenbrier students and families a behind-the-scenes peek at some of the exciting things going on in our library media program. If you are interested in seeing new posts when this blog is updated, be sure to subscribe or follow our new Greenbrier Elementary Library Media Center Facebook page.

While I was setting up the Facebook page,  I also created two logos for our media program using www.freelogodesign.org. While it was tempting to create a book-themed logo, I went with a four-part logo to represent reading, digital citizenship, making and computational thinking -- four important components of today's library media program.

The other logo I created is for a slogan I have been throwing around for a school-wide reading program or promotion: Rocketeers Are Readers. Our school mascot is the Rocketeers (does it get any more awesome than that?), and I landed on the "are readers" in the spring while listening to a great episode of The Yarn, a podcast by Donalyn Miller & Colby Sharp. They were talking about how important it is for kids to develop a self-identity as a reader, and that struck a chord with me as I thought about our book sharing sessions and how proud I am that so many of our students, I think, do have that self identity. I love that "Rocketeers Are Readers" combines an awareness that it takes a lot of reading to develop an exciting, high-tech skill like working with rockets, with a sense of school spirit and pride in that identity as readers. I'd love to use it with a collective project like having students share selfies with the books they are reading or logging the number of books read school-wide on a chart where we try to propel a rocket ship from Earth to the Moon, with each book read representing a certain number of miles.

What do you think of the logos and the "Rocketeers Are Readers" slogan? What kind of reading program do you think would interest students the most? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for reading!
